Distribution of lipid classes and groups and fatty acid composition of neutral and polar lipid fractions corresponding to two edible sites (head and tail) were investigated. Proximate composition and essential and toxic mineral contents were also analysed. Moisture, total lipid and protein contents ranged from 828-845, 3.0-3.7 and 135-170 g kg muscle, respectively. Phospholipids were found to be the most abundant lipid group (690-720 g kg total lipids) and triacylglycerol presence was very low (3.27.7 g kg total lipids). The most abundant fatty acid group comprised polyunsaturated fats. In both neutral and polar lipid fractions, 22:6 n-3 was found to be the major fatty acid, followed by 16:0 and 18:1 n-9. Nutritionally valuable high concentrations of Zn and Mn were observed, and As was the most abundant toxic element. Higher protein and trimethylamine oxide values were observed in the tail site, but lower in moisture, sterol and triacylglycerol contents; however, an inhomogeneous muscle distribution could not be demonstrated with regards to total lipids, phospholipids, free fatty acids or α-tocopherol contents. Mean concentrations of essential and toxic elements were higher in the head site in most cases, especially for Zn, Cd, Cr and V. Running Title: Chemical composition of angler muscle 55

The Trematode Parasites of Lophius piscatorius (Angler Fish) from the Aegean Sea.

OBJECTIVE There is no study on the trematode parasites of Lophius piscatorius. The aim of this study is to address the lack of knowledge about the parasites of angler fish from the coasts of Turkish seas. METHODS Frozen individuals of L. piscatorius from the coasts of Izmir were brought to Ataturk University, and their visceral organs were parasitologically investigated. Parasites were fixed ...

In the present work, the use of slurry ice (SI) system was investigated for the on-board storage of chilled fish and carried out in parallel to traditional flake icing (FI). Three species (hake, M...

Renal Transport of Urea and Some Carbohydrates in Lophius piscatorius'

The renal handling of urea has been studied by many investigators on a host of animals. It has been found that urea is actively secreted by certain species (Munro, '53; Forster, '54), reabsorbed by others (Smith, '31a, b), and in some the renal handling seems to be entirely passive (Shannen, '36). The aglomerular goose fish (Lophius piscatorius) is reportedly able to secrete urea actively from ...

Isolation of mycobacteria from frozen fish destined for human consumption.

Mycobacteria were isolated from defrost water and tissue of sole (Solea solea), hake (Merluccius merluccius), cod (Gadus morhua), ling (Genypterus blacodes), and monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) on Löwenstein-Jensen medium after incubation at different temperatures. Samples of frozen fish were obtained under sterile conditions inside a refrigeration chamber (-18 to -22 degrees C) in a wholesale m...

A microsporidian parasite of the genus Spraguea in the nervous tissues of the Japanese anglerfish Lophius litulon.

In the present study, a high percentage of Japanese anglerfish, Lophius litulon (Jordan, 1902), contained a microsporidian infection of the nervous tissues. Xenomas were removed and prepared for standard wax histology and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). DNA extractions were performed on parasite spores and used in PCR and sequencing reactions. Fresh spores measured 3.4 x 1.8 microm and ...
